A Chengdu, Cina, l’architetto più ecologico d’America ha progettato una città nella città. 300mila mq di cemento armato e vetro con risparmi energetici da record.

Un prototipo. È così che, al telefono da New York, Steven Holl definisce il suo Sliced Porosity Block (“blocco poroso affettato”, anche se in inglese suona decisamente meglio) di Chengdu. Un complesso futuribile formato da cinque torri per abitazioni e uffici, centro commerciale, auditorio, hotel e piazze multilivello, già inaugurato, ma ancora in progress. E viene spontaneo chiedersi come si debba declinare, quest’idea seducente di “prototipo”: se come un mega-esperimento riuscito di green architecture, futuro capostipite di altre pratiche virtuose nelle megalopoli cinesi e non (il committente, CapitaLand, è una delle maggiori società immobiliari asiatiche); o come l’ennesima architettura griffata da un archistar occidentale con volumi da guinness dei primati. Forse il vero potenziale del Block sta nell’essere entrambe le cose, in omaggio alla logica armonizzante del taoista ba gua, o yin yang, cui Holl si è ispirato per un altro suo progetto Made in China. Sta disegnando i due musei complementari di Ecologia e Progettazione (ciascuno il negativo/positivo dell’altro) della Eco-City Tianjin, in costruzione sulle rive del Mar Giallo. Luci e ombre, qui, si fronteggiano anche nella scelta del governo cinese (in tandem con Singapore) di costruire una città-manifesto “verde” sulle aree bonificate della Baia di Bohai, dove, nel 2011, la massiccia perdita di petrolio da due piattaforme (al 51% della China National Offshore Oil Corporation e al 49% della statunitense ConocoPhillips) fu messa a tacere per un mese, prima di correre ai ripari. Del resto, Holl lavora contemporaneamente su due fronti: il segreto del suo successo, rivela, è il ping-pong tra lo studio di New York e quello di Pechino, aperto un decennio fa e dove oggi lavorano 10 dei suoi 40 dipendenti. “Fino al 2001 non ero mai stato in Cina, ma da allora ci sono tornato quasi 70 volte. Amo lavorare lì, perché mi consente di produrre un impatto reale.
