Morteza, the power of fiction

I adore Morteza. I adore his way of telling stories, his caring for accurate, detailed and yet free narration, abiding by the rules of his own imagination exclusively. Morteza fills his beholder with plenty of amazement and enthusiasm. His world is marvellous, his works are highly evocative. The same applies to this series of palettes defying all expectations and featuring pictures and ready-made landscapes.

Right on a painter’s palette, typically home to formless colour stains, there comes a finished picture leaving usual expectations unmet and defying all forecasts. Metaphorical pictures in continuous evolution, open and outlandish scenarios raising a number of questions: where are we? What is happening? Who are those characters? Have we arrived to a new wonderland? What kind of a land? Who is at the wheel?

Thoughts immediately go to emotional tales, inner landscapes of souls in motion, no strings attached, no texts imposed as in the regular children’s illustration business. Finally free, the artist can follow his own rules and satisfy his own needs. Nothing else matters. Marks, form and colour reveal inner feelings and intimate thoughts, propose topics that even skilful eyes may find difficult to decode. What is this pictorial blob all about? How are these palettes and their suspended emptiness to be looked at? And what on earth is the meaning of those other scenes teeming with strange plastic creatures? How are fairy castles, Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, angels, hearts, toy soldiers, rabbits, umbrellas, insects, acrobats, aeroplanes and even empty air balloons to be interpreted? What are the words and phrases scattered throughout the painting in English, German, or Farsi trying to tell the beholder (including free, nice, das Leben, mori, fatva, Iran)?

The clues are in fact abundant, and among them, Iran stands out as a key word. A key to the painter’s thoughts and to the pictures thereof on his palettes. Drawing its chief inspiration on the pop culture, Morteza Zahedi’s very personal vision of his own country shapes his medium and depicts modern-day Iran and its major contradictions in a smart and very sensitive manner. His approach can be either very serious or mocking, in a probably successful attempt to let the factual truth emerge.
Painted landscapes featuring a very accurate definition of colours, sometimes serve as a background for raised elements like stickers, small toys or even a sewing kit, depending on the fictional purpose. Defiling humour? Pure provocation? Just fun?

Regardless of the reason why, these pictures conjure up a plot that will not leave you unimpressed. It defies expectations and provides food for thought. The artist is strikingly involved in receiving and mirroring reality and its facets by choosing the medium that better suits him and enables him to showcase his excellent painting and drawing technique and his remarkable interpreting skills. His mastery and suppleness are considerable. I adore Morteza. He is so precise. So selective. And yet sober and self-assured in his expression. I adore plunging into his landscapes, each with their different rationale. Like these palettes, tellers of unspeakable stories.
